Apple Add-ons Ripe Market for Local Firms
May 20, 2012
Walking through the Huaqiangbei area of Shenzhen, it is not uncommon to see crowds of people thronging the shops selling accessories for Apple's iPhone and iPad. Known as the "first street of electronic products" in China, Huaqiangbei attracts 300,000 to 500,000 shoppers every day for products as diverse as regular iPhone cases to customized earphones and large volume portable batteries. But what makes the street really unique is that it is the destination of choice for Apple aficionados from China and abroad. Not surprisingly in Shenzhen, there is a whole genre of industries that thrive from producing accessories for Apple products, cashing in on the immense popularity of the US company in China. These 500-odd companies in Shenzhen realize profits of more than 10 billion yuan ($1.58 billion) every year from Apple accessory production and sales, according to statistics provided by the Shenzhen Mobile Communications Association. Netflix Dims; Aereo In Cable TV Trade Show Spotlight
May 20, 2012
Look for startup Aereo, not online video renter Netflix (NFLX), to be the hot topic when cable TV industry honchos gather in Boston starting on Monday. Shares in Netflix have plunged more than 70% since the last annual trade show for the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA)held last June in Chicago. Worry over Netflix's online streaming and effect on "cord-cutting" ¡ª pay-TV subscribers that switch to free Internet video ¡ª pervaded last year's cable show. A year later, cable TV companies such as Comcast (CMCSA) and Time Warner Cable (TWC) are expanding their own in-home offerings to iPads and Internet-connected TVs, while Netflix struggles to rebound from an ill-timed price hike that led to subscriber losses. Cable TV operators might find upside in a legal battle pitting startup Aereo, formerly called Bamboom, against TV broadcast networks. (Source: news.investors.com)

China E-Commerce Market To Pass U.S.
May 20, 2012
A Chinese think tank says that the transaction size or sales value of China's online shopping market will surpass Japan in 2012, and exceed the U.S. by 2013, making it the world's largest online trading market. The prediction was part of a China Business Development Report Forecast for 2011-2012 issued by the government-run National Academy of Economic Strategy on Thursday. The group is part of the influential Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The forecast details were first reported by China's Economic Information Daily and later picked up by state-run China Daily. The report said China's overall e-commerce market grew by 45.8% in 2011. There's said to be lots of room to grow, since almost half of Chinese chain stores have yet to start selling online. Online shopping is said to account for only 4.3% of the country's total retail sales of consumer goods. (Source: news.investors.com)

Google Gets China OK to Buy Motorola
May 20, 2012
Authorities in China have approved Google Inc.'s bid to buy phone maker Motorola Mobility, clearing the way for the $12.5 billion deal to close early next week. But Chinese regulators attached a big condition: That Google's Android operating system for mobile devices remain available to all at no cost for the next five years. The approval brings the Internet search giant closer to sealing its biggest acquisition ever. Buying Motorola allows Google to expand into manufacturing phones, tablet computers and other consumer devices for the first time. The deal also gives Google access to more than 17,000 Motorola patents. The Chinese government approved the deal on Saturday, Google spokeswoman Niki Fenwick said. "We look forward to closing the deal," she said. The deal was announced last August and had received all necessary regulatory approvals except in China. (Source: www.usatoday.com)
